Membership ideas, checked against real communities
Most lists of community business ideas are guesswork: a hundred niches somebody thought of, with no evidence that anyone is paying for any of them. This tool starts from 384 communities already indexed here, reads what they charge, and shows you where a category is crowded and where it is not.
The pattern repeats in almost every category: supply piles up at the cheap end. Dozens of communities charge under $25 a month, a handful charge over $50, and almost nobody runs a small, expensive, hands-on room. Not because the premium end fails. The communities sitting there are usually the healthiest in their category. It is because a low price is simply the easier thing to launch. If you have real expertise and limited hours, the crowded end is the worst place to start.
A membership idea worth pursuing needs three things: a subject you know deeply, someone specific to help, and proof that the price works. That last one means comparable communities in the same category already charging in the same range, linked so you can go and read them.
You get back a proposed idea and the argument behind it: your category’s price distribution with the under-served band marked, a one-line statement of the gap, up to three real comparable communities, a suggested price, format and weekly cadence matched to the hours you have, and a platform recommendation scored against your answers. Nothing in it is a projection, and nothing promises an income.

Common questions
- What makes a good membership idea?
- One where you already know something specific, the people you would help are easy to name, and somebody comparable is already charging for it. The third part is what separates an idea from a hunch. If nobody in the category charges anything, you are not early, you are alone.
- Do I need an audience before starting a community?
- No, but it changes what you should charge. With no audience the realistic start is a founding cohort of ten to twenty people you invite by hand, priced high enough that ten of them is a real month. A large audience makes the opposite model work: low price, high volume.
- How much should I charge for a membership?
- Most communities in this index sit between $9 and $99 a month. Below $25 you are selling access to a room and need volume; above $50 you are selling your attention and need to actually give it. The report shows the real price distribution for your category so you can see which end is crowded.
- Which platform should I build a paid community on?
- It follows from the format you want to run, not the other way round. Course-led memberships suit Skool and Mighty Networks; anything that lives on live video suits Swarm; a mixed format under your own brand suits Circle. The report scores all four against your answers.
- Is the Idea Finder free?
- Yes. The report is on screen in full without giving an email address. Entering one unlocks the remaining comparable communities and sends you a copy to keep.
